A/Z provided mechanical and electrical design and construction services to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Agriculture for the Integrated Facility Improvement Project at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center. As part of a major renovation and facility expansion, much of it within BSL-3ag guidelines, A/Z was responsible for the detailed design and implementation of the plumbing and HVAC scope of work within the 32,000 sf project footprint. A/Z’s dedicated in-house design team utilized BIM to manage the extremely precise requirements of the facility’s plumbing, HVAC, and electrical infrastructure through concrete bio-containment inbeds. The three-dimensional models were not only essential for planning, clash detection, and MEP rough-in; the models were also used for the fabrication of carbon steel piping at A/Z’s machine shop. The success of this project was highly dependent on the project team’s ability to manage concurrent trade work in an active facility while complying with stringent security and hygiene requirements.
