Due to the repeated storms and subsequent electrical utility outages experienced by the State of Connecticut over the past several years, the CT Microgrid Program was developed through the state’s collaboration with the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP). The purpose of the microgrid program was to harden power generation and distribution assets at key facilities throughout Connecticut in order to mitigate the impact of power outages. The University engaged A/Z to support the design and implementation of a microgrid system that would automate the campus’ existing fuel cell power plant processes of “islanding,” load shedding, and loading, which ensures consistent and reliable operations in the face of a major outage event.
