A/Z is managing the replacement of Plum Island Animal Disease Center’s critical waste water thermal decontamination system (WWTDS), which processes contaminants generated by the Plum Island Animal Disease Center. The existing, aging wastewater treatment system will be replaced by a state-of-the-art Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 3: Enhanced facility. More than 65,000 gallons of raw and animal waste will be processed every day by the system. The WWTDS will heat waste and hold it under pressure for a set duration before being discharged to a sewage treatment plant. The WWTDS will require the installation of specialized equipment that is expected to include more than 60,000 gallons of storage space in carbon steel tanks, a series of 3,000+ gallon steel cook tanks, sea water heat exchangers, and a HEPA ventilation system.
